Students and Teachers Can Apply for FEMA Assistance
Students and teachers whose homes and personal property were damaged by Tropical Storm Arthur that occurred June 17-24, can apply for FEMA disaster assistance. FEMA may be able to help eligible individuals and families in Avoyelles, Lafourche, Pointe Coupee, St. Landry, St. Tammany and Terrebonne parishes replace items needed for back to school, including computers, textbooks and school supplies.
▪ Students and teachers may qualify for assistance for other disaster-caused expenses, such as essential personal property losses. These may include:
o Repair or replacement of necessary personal property such as textbooks, computers, school supplies, furniture, appliances or clothing.
o Repair or replacement of tools and other job-related equipment required if you are self-employed.
o Vehicle repair or replacement.
o Uninsured or out-of-pocket medical, dental, childcare, and moving and storage expenses.
▪ FEMA may help pay for temporary housing needs whether you rent or own a home. Options may include:
o Rental Assistance to rent another place to live if you are displaced from your primary residence because of the disaster.
o Displacement Assistance or Lodging Expense Reimbursement to help with immediate housing needs if you can’t return to your affected residence because of the disaster. These funds can be used to stay in a hotel, motel or other short-term lodging.
11 How do I apply?
▪ If you live in one of the six designated parishes, the deadline to apply is Oct. 1. Here’s how to apply for FEMA assistance:
o The fastest way to apply is online at DisasterAssistance.gov
o You may also use the FEMA mobile app
o Call the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362. Lines are open 24 hours, seven days a week. If you use a relay service, captioned telephone or other service, you can give FEMA your number for that service. Helpline specialists speak many languages. Press 2 for Spanish.
o Visit any Disaster Recovery Center to receive in-person assistance. To find one close to you, use your ZIP code to search FEMA.gov/DRC.
