Secretary of State Gregg M. Amore Announces Gregory Abilheira as Legal Counsel

PROVIDENCE, RI – Secretary of State Gregg M. Amore today announced that L. Gregory Abilheira has joined the RI Department of State as Legal Counsel.

Abilheira's prior experience includes ten years with the Rhode Island Office of the Attorney General, serving most recently as a Special Assistant Attorney General in the Intake Unit. He was previously assigned to the Narcotics and Violent Crime Unit, where Abilheira prosecuted high profile homicide, gun, and drug cases. Prior to that, Abilheira served as a Special Assistant Attorney General in Newport and Providence counties.

"Greg's broad knowledge of the law and experiences in and out of the courtroom will be an incredible asset for us at the Department of State," said Secretary of State Gregg M. Amore. "Time and again, across the nation, we're facing unprecedented challenges to some of our most important rights and freedoms – including the right to vote. The Department of State is committed to ensuring Rhode Islanders' rights are protected, and Greg will be a critical member of our team in doing so."

Abilheira earned a bachelor's degree from Boston College and a Juris Doctorate from Roger Williams University School of Law. He is licensed to practice law in Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

Abilheira joins the team following the transition of former Legal Counsel Jennifer Griffith into a new role as the first-ever dedicated coordinator of the State's Address Confidentiality Program. The Address Confidentiality Program supports victims of domestic violence, stalking, sexual assault, and trafficking and/or abuse to keep their address and records private through a mail-forwarding service. The Department serves over 150 individuals through the Program, which has more than tripled in size since its expansion to offer address services in 2023.
