A library hotel where Japanese culture is met by chance — the Ginza Tsutaya Books curator on the thinking behind Shiba Park Hotel’s collection.

MINATO-KU, TOKYO, JAPAN, October 20, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Shiba Park Hotel (Operated by Shiba Park Hotel Co., Ltd. / Minato-ku, Tokyo / President: Noriyoshi Tanaka), guided by the concept “A library hotel that connects people, towns, and history,” has developed a library collection on the theme of Japanese culture throughout the hotel. For this release, Shiba Park Hotel spoke with Fumiaki Bamba of Culture Convenience Club Co., Ltd.’s Art Lab MD Planning, who directed the book selection, about the thinking behind the collection, its concept, and the effort to create chance encounters with books.

A Place That Opens Through Books, From a Hotel That Has Walked With Its Neighborhood Since 1948

The starting point for the book selection was the Tokyo history of Shiba Park Hotel itself: since its founding in 1948, the hotel has been a landmark of the Shiba area, cherished not only by guests from overseas but by the local community. The spot where the front desk now stands was once a beloved bar, and the restaurant, too, has long served the neighborhood. Carrying these memories of the hotel forward through books, the aim was a library that could feel like an “open place” to as many people as possible.

The selection focuses on books connected to Shiba, Hamamatsucho and Daimon — the neighborhoods surrounding the hotel, near Tokyo Tower — alongside the shifting history and culture of Tokyo from the Edo period (1603–1868) to the present, taking in both Tokyo history and Tokyo attractions. From this grew a larger theme: “Weaving value over time.” Built around Japanese culture, the collection has grown into one that guests from Japan and abroad can equally enjoy.

Things to Do in Tokyo, Beginning Inside the Hotel: Past, Present and Future
In the first-floor Library Lounge, books were selected around the theme Shiba Park Hotel holds dear: “Weaving value over time.” From there, the bookshelves lining the Central Staircase up to the second floor express the passage of time through “past, present and future.” In the Inglenook, on the guest room floors, books meant for settling in and reading slowly were chosen; in the restaurant, books that enrich the experience of food and conversation. Each space offers its own way of spending time and its own discoveries, while the hotel as a whole is designed to connect into a single story.

■1F Library Lounge | “Universal and unshakeable beauty” — and Books for Japan Travel
The first floor centers on books that convey a quality unchanged by time, and Japanese tradition. Travel guides and picture books are also included, making the space approachable both for guests from overseas and for those who wish to settle in slowly after check-in.

■Central Staircase and 2F | Past, Present and Future
The Central Staircase leading to the second floor, along with three bookshelves, is organized around the passage of time — past, present and future, presented as “History to cherish,” “Things to face now” and “Think about the future.” The books are chosen to be clear and symbolic, catching the eye even in passing and prompting the thought, “Why is this here?” Comics set in a future Tokyo, art that unsettles preexisting notions, and books on manufacturing that use cutting-edge technology all serve as entry points for thinking about Japanese art and the future.

■Inglenook on the Guest Room Floors | A Small Place of One’s Own, for Slow Reading
An inglenook is “a small room with a warm, comfortable atmosphere,” created beside the elevator on each guest room floor. For these hideaway-like nooks, books meant to be enjoyed seated and unhurried were chosen. Alongside large art books and photo books, compact, easy-to-pick-up volumes are also placed, proposing the kind of moment guests might want to carry back to their room to keep reading.

■1F The Dining | Books That Lead Into the Experience of Food
In the restaurant, harmony with mealtime is valued. Themes connected to taste and comfort — alcohol, food, spice, flavor, greenery and flowers — are chosen, bringing books from several genres together within a single space.

Serendipity Over Searchability: A Cover That Awakens New Interest
At a typical bookstore, searchability — helping a reader find the book they are looking for — matters most. At Shiba Park Hotel, the shelves instead favor “face-out” display, showing the cover of each book. Without dividers such as “art” or “literature,” guests can sense the character of a shelf from the impression of its covers and pick up a book on instinct.
A title glanced at in passing awakens an interest guests had not yet put into words themselves. A new discovery, a hint toward a way of living, an insight not being actively sought — the serendipity that arises precisely because one came without a fixed purpose is layered onto the experience of the stay itself.

Each Shelf Carries the Character of the Person Who Chose It
The selection was made together with concierges from Ginza Tsutaya Books, each specializing in a different genre. Alongside titles that define a genre and books that are currently talked about, works with a deep connection to Japanese culture were chosen through the lens of “Weaving value over time.” The flow of books within each shelf, and even how the books appear, were designed to match the location and the way each space is used.

A Library That Grows Together With Its Guests
Bamba also raises an idea: if the hotel could learn which books a staying guest liked, or what they read, that knowledge could inform future selections and lead to discoveries for other guests as well. The bookshelves throughout the hotel are not a finished form — they are a place that will keep being renewed through the accumulation of encounters between people and books.
Shiba Park Hotel looks to deliver time in which books become not merely something to read, but an occasion to encounter the town, its history, its culture, and one’s own interests — a starting point for Tokyo travel that begins on a bookshelf.
