For high school students interested in science, Freshwater Scholars offers an opportunity to move beyond the classroom and into hands-on research.

At UW-Green Bay, scholars spend the summer working alongside mentors to investigate freshwater science and water quality issues while building professional skills before college.

Through the program, students are matched with a mentor and focus on a research project while exploring the broader field through presentations, field trips and other hands-on experiences. From learning in the lab to spending time in the field, scholars gain a firsthand look at how science can make an impact in their communities.

“Freshwater Scholars really helped me narrow down my academic options at Green Bay. And I’m honestly grateful for that,” said Reece, a former Freshwater Scholar and current UW-Green Bay student.

By the end of the program, participants leave with valuable research experience, new skills and a better understanding of opportunities in freshwater-related fields.
